Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998)

Piano Trio
Schnittkes piano trio in two movements is a 1992 reworking of his 1985 string trio. It is easily understood by audiences but at the same time a highly expressive and troublesome music reflecting personal experience of deadly disease (1985 Schnittke suffered the first of many cerebral strokes). The version for piano trio was dedicated to Schnittkes wife the pianist Irina Schnittke. 2003 I had the privilege to play this trio with her and with Schnittkes close friend and biographer, the cellist Alexander Ivashkin (1948-2014)  in the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry House. There could not be any better interpreters and mentors for this piece than these two outstanding musicians.  The live recording of this concert is here:

Klaviertrio

Das zweisätzige Klaviertrio von Schnittke entstand 1992 als Umarbeitung des 1985 entstandenen Streichtrios. Es ist ein leicht zugängliches, aber erschütterndes Werk, von Grenzerfahrungen und letzten Dingen sprechend (Schnittke erlitt 1985 den ersten von vielen Hirnschlägen). Die Fassung für Klaviertrio wurde Schnittkes Frau, der Pianistin Irina Schnittke gewidmet. 2003 hatte ich das Riesenglück, dieses Trio mit ihr und mit Schnittkes engem Freund und Biographen, dem Cellisten Alexander Ivashkin (1948-2014) aufführen zu dürfen. Es gab wohl keine berufeneren Interpreten und Mentoren für dieses Stück als diese beiden hervorragenden Musiker. Hier ist die Aufnahme des Konzerts auf Youtube.
